#1 Acoma Pueblo by Maris Engle The judges felt this was a very simple well done image with strong leading lines, crisp focus, good color and no distractions.
Score: 13+13+14=40 pts
|
#2 At the Wall by Jim Hasapis The judges liked the impact of this image and the perspective of shooting up from ground level. It told a good story. Some liked all the elements in the photo, some thought it too busy.
Score: 12+13+14=39 pts
|
#3 Billy and Ruth by Jim McClanaham The idea and concept were good in this image. There was a bit of concern over the harsh lighting and sharp angles. Some liked the faces placement, some wanted them off center. Perhaps filling the frame more with the faces might work better.
Score: 11+11+12=34

#4 Boardwalk by Jim McClanaham This image has nice leading lines taking you into the frame. But when you get into the frame it is a bit busy and chaotic. It was felt you might want to concentrate on the railing and boardwalk more and try to eliminated or minimize all the other stuff.
Score: 8+9+10=27 pts

#5 Bug at Freedom by Marquis Harrison This boy was in sharp focus only in the head area. It was felt that adjusting the film plane just a little would get the whole caterpillar in focus as that looked to be the intention. The background was a little distracting and not blurred enough.
Score: 10+10+10=30 pts |
#6 Coming Down the River by Ken Barrett The judges liked the frame within the frame idea of this image along with the nice depth of field. However, the frame needs to be cropped off left of the tree stump to really nail the concept. Also the lighting seems a little flat and the kayacks too far away.
Score: 10+11+12=33 pts
|
#7 Flower at Freedom by Marquis Harrison The background and color are nice in this image. The judges wanted the shooter to go back and work the image more. The flower was a bit hot in the middle and too contrasty overall. Also they wanted more of the flower cut off, or none of the flower cut off. Clipping the tips of the flower makes it look like a boo boo.
Score: 9+9+10=28 pts

#8 Having Fun by Marilyn Feinkel This is a nice fun semi-posed shot. Background was a distraction but was minimal. Some wanted both eyes seen on the right woman, some wanted more contrast. Some wanted the camera angle moved up a smidge.
Score: 10+11+12=33 pts
|

#9 Into the Fog by Ken Barrett Nice leading lines, with good color and exposure. The judges wanted to see a little more boat, perhaps moving it closer to the left tree to get some texture. But then again, some thought the boat was too prominent as it merged with the right tree. Some felt the impact was a little low.
Score: 12+12+13=37 pts

#10 James River by Rusty Rhodes Nice river shot with a good S-curve and good sky. The judges liked the river rocks to give some weight to the bottom along with perspective. But also they wanted to change the angle around a little to not cut some of the rocks in half, and to pan left to get rid of the dark right. It did lack a center of interest.
Score: 11+12+13=36 pts
|
#11 Muffin by Joe Colavita This is a nice humorous story shot. The impact both imagined and real adds interest to the story. However, the scene needs to be worked more to get to the next level. The easiest way would be to work on perspective to show a more creative image. Also, some did not like the halo look around the sign. And the background was a little distracting.
Score: 10+11+11=32 pts

#12 Nest Building by Jim Hasapis Very Nice shot here. Good Story, Reasonable focus, good blurred background. Excellent timing. The wings might lack a little detail. Also it was suggested, panning might help increase the feeling of motion. But these are minor adjustments.
Score: 13+14+15=42 pts

#13 Orson's Double by Marilyn Fienkel The judges liked the good dramatic idea of this image. The harsh lighting, though creating some hot spots, is a plus. Some really liked the lighting direction as it is, some wanted a bit more light in the eyes as that is the key to most portraits. Some thought that side lighting instead of top lighting might work better.
Score: 11+11+13=35 pts
|
#14 Reaching by Rusty Rhodes The judges liked the story aspect of this image, that was its strength. However, they did want to see more of the child in the frame. Also, the focus seemed a little soft and the exposure a little off.
Score: 9+11+11=31 pts
|
#15 Golden Gate Park Japanese Gardens by Bob Budka The judges felt this was a reasonable record shot. Some liked the trees overhanging (to block a dull sky), some thought they interfered with the roofline and peak too much. It also would benefit from better light at a different time of day.
Score: 11+11+12=34 pts
|
#16 Slinky Snails by Bob Budka This is a real attention grabber with good color and lighting. It's a creative image with good symmetry, diagonal lines, and nice vibrant colors.
Score: 13+13+14=40 pts
|

#17 Split Beans by Joe Colavita All the judges liked the very interesting backdrop patterns as their eyes wandered thru the image. Most felt that was the more interesting aspect (as opposed to the opaque disks). Most wanted that pattern to be in the foreground, leading your eye into the frame and to the disks. Still a nice creative image.
Score: 12+13+13=38 pts
|
#18 Wave by Maris Engle This image had the widest rang of opinion. All thought it was a nice capture of the wave peak with good exposure and focus. Some liked the broken dock, some did not. Some liked the overall scene, some thought it lacked a bit of impact.
Score: 9+11+14=34 pts
